Riyadh Airport Terminals
All the information featured on this page was compiled and written by David Enrich, a renowned expert in aviation and airport guides since 1999.
King Khalid International Airport, located about 35 km north of Riyadh, opened in 1983 as part of Saudi Arabia’s rapid modernization and expansion of air transport infrastructure.
Its origins date back even earlier: Riyadh’s first airport was built in 1946, but growing demand and urban expansion led to congestion, prompting the creation of a much larger and more advanced airport complex.
Today, RUH has evolved from a regional gateway into a major Middle Eastern hub, with continuous upgrades and expansion projects to handle increasing passenger traffic.
RUH is a multi-terminal airport—always check your terminal before arriving, as distances can be significant.
Terminal Overview (Structure & Layout)
The airport consists of five main passenger terminals plus a Royal Terminal for VIPs and official guests.
- Terminals 1–4: Built in 1983, interconnected by walkways
- Terminal 5: Opened in 2016, more modern and efficient
- Royal Terminal: Exclusive for government and royal use
Each terminal features departures and arrivals levels, check-in areas, security zones, boarding gates, and commercial spaces.
Main Terminal Uses
- Terminal 1 & 3: International flights
- Terminal 4: Saudia & flyadeal international
- Terminal 5: Domestic flights
If you have a connection, allow extra time—transfers between terminals may require walking or shuttle buses.
Shopping & Duty Free (Expanded)
Shopping at RUH is one of its highlights, especially in renovated terminals.
Types of Shops
- Duty Free: perfumes, cosmetics, alcohol-free luxury goods
- Fashion & Accessories: international brands and travel essentials
- Electronics: gadgets, headphones, chargers
- Local products: dates, oud perfumes, souvenirs
Duty Free shops are mainly located after security in departure areas, especially in Terminals 1, 3 and 5.
Buy Saudi dates or oud here—they’re authentic and often cheaper than in the city.
